Patient Whiteboards to Improve Patient-Centered Care in Hospital
"Inpatient whiteboards help physicians and ancillary staff with communication, improve patients' awareness of their care team, admission plans and duration of admission, and significantly improve patient overall satisfaction"
A 3 week pilot project was conducted at Standford University Medical Center to gauge the effectiveness of whiteboards as a tool for communication between patients and hospital staff. It was discovered that whiteboard use noticeably increased the number of patients who knew; their physician, their admission goals, and their estimated discharge date. Additionally, this study suggests a significant peak in the overall satisfaction rates among patients who used whiteboards as a communication tool as compared to the control group that did not.
